The Best Homemade Burger Bun Recipe

Jump To

When it comes to crafting the ultimate burger, one element often gets overlooked: the burger bun. At Greek Food Alchemist, we believe the bun isn’t just a container—it’s a key ingredient. Swapping store-bought buns for homemade burger buns can completely transform your burger experience.

The Bun Makes the Burger

You can have the juiciest patty, the boldest sauces, and the crispiest lettuce—but if your bun is dry, bland, or overly processed, it can ruin the entire meal.

Homemade burger buns are soft, slightly sweet, and beautifully golden on the outside. They strike the perfect balance of structure and tenderness—strong enough to hold everything together, yet light enough not to overpower the filling.

Why Bake Your Own Buns?

There’s something magical about baking your own bread. You know exactly what goes in: no additives, no preservatives, just real, wholesome ingredients. Plus, you’re in charge of the flavor and texture. Want them fluffier? Heartier? With a hint of sourness? You’re the alchemist in the kitchen.

A Greek-Inspired Twist

At Greek Food Alchemist, we love infusing even the most classic recipes with a Mediterranean touch:

  • Brush your buns with extra virgin olive oil for a delicate shine.
  • Sprinkle with oregano-infused sesame seeds for flavor.
  • Swap in a little whole grain flour for depth and nuttiness.

It’s all about merging tradition with creativity.

The Ritual of Homemade

Baking burger buns from scratch isn’t just about the end result—it’s about the process. The smell of dough rising, the joy of shaping each roll, and the golden glow when they come out of the oven—this is slow food at its finest. And when your guests take that first bite? Pure alchemy.

Sustainability in the Kitchen

Making your own burger buns isn’t just delicious, it’s sustainable. You’ll cut down on plastic packaging, reduce food waste, and skip the unnecessary transport of store-bought bread. It’s a small but meaningful step toward a more mindful kitchen—one of the core values of Greek Food Alchemist.

Final Bite

Homemade burger buns are an easy upgrade that turns a simple meal into a gourmet experience. They’re soft, customizable, and downright delicious. Next time you plan burgers, skip the supermarket shelf and embrace the magic of homemade—you’ll never look back.

Greek Food Alchemist Tip: Pair your homemade buns with bold Mediterranean-inspired fillings—think juicy lamb burgers with feta, sun-dried tomatoes, Kalamata olives, or a dollop of refreshing tzatziki.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 3 tbsp melted butter,cold
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 9 gr yeast
  • 1 egg, to brush
  • sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

Step 1

Melt the butter and let it cool. Add the salt in the butter

Step 2

Add the flour, yeast and sugar in a bowl or mixer. Slowly add the water and start kneading the dough. Add the egg. Once that has been incorporated, add the cold butter with salt. Knead for about 5 more minutes. Transfer to an oiled bowl, cover with cling film and let it rise for about 1.5 hour

Step 3

Once the dough has rested and doubled in size, knock the air out and start shaping the buns. You can decide the shape and size. I made 10 medium size buns but you can easily make 6 big ones or even sub rolls. Place them in a tray lined with parchment paper.

Step 4

Cover them again and let them double in size for about 30min. Pre -heat your oven at 190ºC.

Step 5

Brush the buns with some egg wash and sprinkle with some sesame seeds. Bake for about 20 minutes. Let them cool for 10 minutes.

Enjoy x

Notes

Bread proofing time really depends on how warm your house is. If you live somewhere cold then it might take longer
